Ensuring Collaboration in Development

So What’s The Problem?

  • Baltimore County has only set aside 19 acres of open space per every 1000 people, well below the state’s policy of 30 acres.
  • There are laws and policies that allow political appointees the power to waive meaningful development standards, disregarding issues like overcrowding schools, dangerous traffic patterns, and threats to air quality.

How Does It Affect Me?

  • Open Spaces are critical to enhancing air quality, absorbing noise and light pollution, and ensuring lower surface temperatures.
  • Current policies in place not only exploit our open spaces, but also make it more difficult for land owners to utilize their land for economic growth.
  • Congested roadways lead to dangerous conditions, increased accidents and lower public safety.
  • Without proper zoning enforcement, our historic business and residential districts will not receive the help they need to revitalize their areas that would help create a more aesthetically pleasing community where people would want to live.

How Will Steve Fix It?

  • Promote policies that encourage smart growth in key areas that will help stimulate economic opportunity.
  • Reform the County’s current process that determines when and where building permits should be issued, especially when they might encroach on an already congested area or overcrowded school districts.
  • Work to protect and preserve what remaining open spaces we have left in southwest Baltimore County
  • Require substantial community input on all development projects in or near their neighborhoods
